When I brag about Chico to outsiders, I always talk about how special we are as a community. Somehow, with 100,000-plus citizens, we have maintained the feeling of a small town. Just walk anywhere in Chico and you will see smiling faces and get warm greetings.
Lately, that smile has been fading a bit. Things are […]

Each week the Realtors in the Chico area gather to share information about the houses we have just listed, and to invite the other agents to come out and view them. Hundreds of us meet.
We share cups of coffee, yogurt, rolls or some juice. The lenders and title companies join us. We ask about each […]

“If you want to live long, go north and go to a college town.” Nancy Graham from AARP the magazine was interviewed on the Today Show this morning on the best retirement towns.
Chico didn’t make the top ten list, but Chico definitely met the criteria. Nancy talked about quality of life, hanging out with college students, being outdoors, parks…sounds like Chico to […]

I looked out my window this morning, and saw a brand new lily in my pond. I have been looking for a bright spot through all the smoke and fire, and I wanted to share it with you.

Mark down July 12th, from 9 til 5, and come downtown! Have some iced down watermelon on the downtown Chico businesses.
This annual event includes a sidewalk sale. But mostly, it is a place to mingle with the rest of Chico. I always run into people I know, and catch up news and family. “I can’t […]

What’s the Fourth of July without the band?
By Debbie Brodie
July 4th, 2008 · No Comments
Fourth of July in my home town included a band playing patriotic songs throughout the day.
No wonder one of my favorite Chico activities is to hear the Chico Community Band play in Bidwell Park. This year, they will be playing from 9:30 til 10:30 in the morning, in the one mile recreation area. Stroll around […]

Out of respect for the firemen

No matter how fun it may be to pull out the fireworks you have purchased out of town, out of state, or out of the country, and set them off on the Fourth of July, don’t!
Our local firemen, and firemen from across the country, have been working night and day to put out the fires […]

The Chico City Council didn’t ban the large fireworks displays, but left the door open to advise shutting them down if the air quality index becomes unhealthy again.
Council-member Tom Nickell requested that the City Council consider banning public and private fireworks and firework displays on July 4th out of concern for public safety and public health. […]

I’ve heard Lake Almanor lovingly called “Chico East.” Since the days of General Bidwell, Chico residents have made the treck to Lake Almanor during the hot summers, especially July.
According to Jay Sabelman, President of the Plumas Association of Realtors, the festivities in Lake Almanor this Fourth of July are “on.” The Chester parade, and the fireworks […]
